Stream of Consciousness Sunday – Never Too Old

In the last year, I’ve actually learned how to cook.  I’m no youngster, so I consider it to be quite a feat.  Even better?  I get to enjoy cooking with my husband.  You wouldn’t think that learning to cook would be such a life changing event but it has definitely changed my life for the better.

1) I now understand how simple ingredients combined can make the tastiest of dishes.  I always assumed you had to buy salad dressings and sauces but we’ve learned to make them!

2) I have a much greater appreciation for how different flavors work together, compliment each other (or can overpower)!  It has made me read restaurant menus with greater knowledge of how the dish with taste.

One of our yummy dishes!
One of our yummy dishes!

3) I’ve become a much more adventurous eater.  We’ve tried things in the last year plus that I never would have tried before.  I’m now a huge fan of brussels sprouts where I would have run from them!

4) We’ve finally started using all of those wonderful kitchen implements that we were given when we got married 20 years ago!  And we’ve added to our collection when we discovered we didn’t have quite the right tool.

5) We learned that waxed paper is no substitute for parchment paper (a big cooking fail)!

6) Dinnertime used to just be something to be checked off a list.  Now, there is the anticipation of the preparation and (usually) the pure enjoyment of the food!  Plus, we eat a lot healthier and we don’t eat out nearly as often.

7) I’ve actually become obsessed with recipes, whereas I used to skip over them.  Right now I am reading a book called Delancy, about a pizza restaurant in Seattle.  The author includes recipes in the book and I honestly want to try every one.

I give the credit to our subscription to food and recipe delivery service Plated.  We started using them in early January 2014 and remain loyal customers to this day.  Each week they offer a variety of meal from which to choose, they source all of the raw ingredients (perfectly portioned) and provide you with the recipe.  The box containing all of this is delivered to your home.  You do the rest.

Note:  Anything I write about in this blog is something I have paid for and have experienced myself.

This was my 5 minute Stream of Consciousness Sunday post. It’s five minutes of your time and a brain dump. Want to try it? Here are the rules…

  1. You are so right. Wax paper is no substitute but I think parchment paper can be used in place of wax paper. What do you think? I haven’t bought wax paper in a long time because I haven’t needed it. If you haven’t already checkout Yummly.com – it’s a website and an app – for the obsessed recipe lover.

    1. We love Plated and have found that to buy the ingredients at the supermarket for an equivalent meal, it would cost more than we are paying for Plated! Let me know if you’d like to give it a try as they often give us free “Plates” to give away and I’d be glad to send you some!

  2. I believe that everyone needs to learn to cook. You just waited a little longer, and that is okay too! I want all 4 of my kids, boys and girls, to learn to cook and have tasty meals. Thanks for sharing!

  3. When I was a kid someone told me Brussels Sprouts are like little cabbages. I hate cooked cabbage! I can’t even stand to be in a building where it’s being cooked, so I wrote off Brussels Sprouts as something I would never try.

Decades later, a friend makes roasted Brussels Sprouts for dinner – my kids are reluctant to try them so I am forced to follow my own culinary rule – “You always have to try one bite.” – surprise, surprise, I love Brussels Sprouts! Now they’re one of my favorite veggies.

  4. I feel like I’ve always known how to cook. For a long time, I still had to look up how long to boil an egg or bake a potato but I know my way around the kitchen. What I didn’t know until I was an adult, though, was how to make things from scratch. Some things give me a thrill while other things are just better store bought! I tried Plated for a little while. The food was good but the cooking was on the complicated side. I spent a long time using Hello Fresh. It’s a similar service that I happen to like better!

  5. I love this post! I remember the first time my husband and I tried to make pizza from scratch. We were living in Uzbekistan and had no one near (and no Internet – this was 12 years ago) to ask for advice. We didn’t understand the difference between a clove of garlic and a whole head of garlic. So, yeah, our love for garlic has grown intense over the years! LOL!
